Wisden 1920 Hardback

A rare original hardback featuring the first full season following the Great War.  The notes by the editor (Sydney Pardon) are also a feature, with various observations not the least being his lamenting some barracking. "A particularly bad case occurred in the Middlesex v Yorkshire match at Lord's in August. J W Hearne ... doing his utmost to save Middlesex ... and yet a section of the crowd hooted him. A remedy for this sort of nuisance is not easy to find .....  A stoppage of the game, however, with all the players staying on the field, might have the effect of bringing the malcontents to their senses."!  I bet he's turned in his grave a few times since then!

The book itself is in generally pleasing condition, solid and without weakness, but not without blemish.  The boards are good, the gilt is bright, the hinges strong and there is little or no foxing or marks internally.  There is some wear and light creasing down the spine as shown in the pictures.

The main issue, which is not unusual from this era, is that the paste on the internal yellow covers has dried out so that the front has separated from page ii.  Usually it's a matter of taste whether this is fixed, although in this case it is beginning to separate from the front board as well, so I would recommend repair - not something I'm going to attempt with my clumsy artistic skills!  The rear paste-down is also showing signs of separating although not nearly as much as the front.  Incidentally, a previous owner has signed on the revealed other side of page ii, something that will also disappear with re-pasting.

I have attempted to show the book on a video file but it's currently as big as 20 meg.  I will try to make this much smaller so email if you want a copy, or if you want more stills.

Once again I've posted with a reserve as a precaution, but I think (or hope) that you will find this realistic.

Payment by cheque only please. The book will be despatched next day special delivery at no additional cost to the buyer.

Payment Details: Cheque or bank transfer only please.

Q: I see you had a 1920 hardback wisden that did not sell. How much will you sell it for? Best wishes Tony  posted by: timmair  25/05/2009 19:43:14
A: Hi Tony, In fact this did sell to the highest bidder on this listing. Best regards, Ken
